Final post for this blog

Finally this short trimester ended. After all those hectic moments, I survived. I took 3 subjects this semester and I am really exhausted because assignments seems to be popping out every second I thought I have the time to take a break.

Although this short sem is really stressful and packed, I have learnt a lot from this subject such as designing effective navigational signs and also making full use of space for exhibitions. Other than that, I like sketching for this subject because we are required to use rulers to draw unlike other subjects and I like LOVE to draw using ruler. Besides, I love making mock up and we didn't get to do it since beta year and I am really glad we have the chance to do the mock up of the navigational sign. If we were asked to do the mock up of the exhibition booth, I will be more thrilled but hey, we have no time to do so.

Next sem will be internship for me so I am really looking forward to be working in a new environment and hopefully learn some useful knowledge.

Project 2: Phase 2

After few days of hardwork, my exhibition booth for Monopoly is done. I am quite satisfied with the outcome, I just hope I can have better lighting and make a little bit more color used. But I am still very impressed with myself able to work under such pressure and still manage to get this done.

Another Exhibition Booth for MI

Before I can start with my Monopoly booth, I still have this assignment waiting to be done. Since it is also an exhibition booth, I guess I can upload it here too. This is an exhibition booth done for a campaign which we chose and my team chose to do a campaign about women abuse. We wanted to share the message that most women are abused at home so we made our exhibition booth looks like a housing area.

This is the first version of it but me and my group members think that it is still not polish enough and the colors seems to be a bit out of the place so we spend more time trying to add more things into it.

These 2 are the final product we came up with and we are all very satisfied with it after few restless days and after this assignment we are ready and set to create another exhibition booth for environmental design.

Research on buildings

Since my exhibition booth consist of 4 tall buildings, I guess I need to get some research on how tall building looks like or else my building will not look like skyscraper but some random toy.

I really like this building and I think I might model a similar 1 and place it in the middle

This is great too but the texture does not really fit with my whole idea.

These 3 are suitable for my booth too so I guess I might pick 1 and stat with it.

Project 2: Phase 1

This is the concept board for my exhibition booth. I want to give it a modern twist with tall buildings which looks like the Big Apple (New York City). I wanted to used bold colors too to give it a playful feeling to suit my target audience.

These are the graphics board and the exhibition profile. The graphics board contain the images that I am going to use in the exhibition booth.

This is the design of my exhibition booth which contain of 4 tall building, a gallery, a reception, a gaming area and a discussion ares. The tall building are to attract people's attention and there will be LCD tv on it to show some promotional videos of Monopoly. The gaming area is to let people try out the latest gaming board from Monopoly and the discussion area is for Monopoly lovers to sit down and have a chat.

Print ads from Monopoly

Here is a series of print ads from Monopoly which I want to share. I guess green and red are their main color so I might choose either 1 of them to be the main color of my exhibition booth.

References of exhibition booth

Brands set up exhibition booths when they want to promote their new products or to re-introduce their services and products to the mass audience outside. Exhibition booths need to have a very striking exterior to attract people's attention and a very informative interior to provide the information that the brand is trying to tell the audience. Here are some example I found that serve as my reference before I start sketching for my exhibition booth:

A very futuristic booth by Motorola that suits the brand identity.

A booth that is very clean and simple but still edgy at the same time.

An exhibition booth by Siemens which look very high tech and interesting.

Like the use of the leaves shape as the roof and the wood texture as the body.

A very unique looking exhibition booth with lights that can attract people.

What brand should I choose for assignment 2

Its time for assignment 2! Its time for me to crack my head too!
What brand am I going to choose? There are so many different fields for me to choose from.
Finally I decided to go with something that we all know and almost every child has played before : Monopoly.
I researched a little bit about Monopoly and here it is:

Monopoly is a board game published by Parker Brothers, a subsidiary of Hasbro. The game is named after the economic concept of monopoly, the domination of a market by a single entity.
The Monopoly game board consists of forty spaces containing twenty-eight properties (twenty-two colored streets, four railroads and two utilities), three Chance spaces, three Community Chest spaces, a Luxury Tax space, an Income Tax space, and the four corner squares: GO, (In) Jail/Just Visiting, Free Parking, and Go to Jail.

Here are some information from Wikipedia and I am sure my exhibition booth will be very playful and interesting!

Creative Buildings

I have posted some billboards and ads that I think are interesting and can maybe somehow stimulate our creative cells (I hope). Now I am going to share some very fascinating weird special creative you name it building around the world.

A house in Japan which does not look like normal house but this idea kind of being done all around the world.

The basket building in the United States. If the interior could be fruits or vegetables that would be better.

The Kansas City Library which looks like a stack of books. These books are said to best represent Kansas City.

A building of piano and violin in China. A very nice building, if I were to visit China 1 day, I will definitely go visit this building.

Interesting Billboard

Billboards are one of the most effective advertising medium and one of the most playful one out there. Here are some of my proofs.

Having pimples on your face? use the billboard to cover your face up.

A personal cleaner to clean up your pores by Pond's. Very cute billboard.

This billboard cannot be any more simple but the message is being delivered.

I have seen this years ago but till now I still think the idea is beyond brilliant.

These creative billboard all have 1 common thing which is they all use their container as content. SEE, I used what I learnt.

Minimalistic Ads

We (Media Innovation students) deal with advertising a lot and mostly, we are advise by lecturer to do things in a complicated way because we are still student trying to get better result, simple things wouldn't get us higher marks. But I am more towards the simplicity side and it is not because I am lazy but i tend to think that if an idea can be delivered by using simple image, then thats a really good idea. Here are some ads that I found simple but still interesting.

Some paper eggs and bacon and you get the idea of how important the product is.

A very simple way to tell you, "Hey, its ladies night" and I bet you laughed.

Just a stack of lego and a shadow and you were sold by the idea.

French fries in some order and you get the idea. Simple as A B C.

This is the most minimal ads I found. It is literally nothing on it but you still get the idea. Very brilliant.

Murphy's Law in Design

Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.
How true is that?

A few experience of my definitely show that this is very true.
1. Printing shop not open on the day of submission.
2. Lost my pendrive which contain all my files.
3. RAIN!
4. Late for presentation and the door has been locked by the lecturers
5. Mount my artwork upside down.
6. Submit the wrong cd to lecturer.
7. The list never ends...

I think why most of these thing will happen is because my carelessness and my very poor time management. Murphy's Law simply can be applied to every single human being on earth since everybody do make mistakes. We are not that perfect after all.

Container as content

Container as content, from my understanding, it would be utilizing the container itself to deliver the content to the audience. Using the container as a content is kind of a effective and fun way to advertise and most importantly it is very cost saving. It kind of will make you go "Oh my god it is so creative" when you see some really nicely crafted container as content designs. Here are some example I found from Google:

A bus stop turned into a fruit vending machine. It save spaces and really give the opportunity for those who are in a rush to get some vitamins.

A tilted billboard. It doesn't need very complicated copywrite because once you see it, you will understand the message it is trying to to deliver.

A wall with seats and tv which kind save the space.

My Navigational Sign

After few days of hard work, here I present you my final design of my navigational design for the recreational park.

I draw my inspiration from the tree trunk and I think this will definitely suitable to be placed in the recreational park. I used the silhouette of a tree trunk but take away the organic feel from it and give it a more modern and minimalistic feel to it with those rough edges.

This is the mock up I did within 3 days and I am kind of happy with the outcome because it looks very similar to what I did on screen.

Research on Navigational Design

Before I starting brain storming for my directory, I need so references to give a rough idea on what are the Do and Don't when creating a directory. These are some directories that I filter out since it is impossible for me to put every images I found because if I do so it will definitely be a very long post. So here we go.

I like this directory because it is not that kind of typical directory that we see in building or at a park. Although it is different but it may cause problem to people because it is kind of all over the place.

Anther directory that I found which is for a park and I am doing a directory for a park too so this could be my reference.

A very dull and boring directory which has no design or personality at all and I guess I will not go into this path and will try to create something fresh and creative.

A very glamorous design which I guess its for a hotel but it is still the same old stereotypical directory which i guess i will try to avoid because I don't want to be consider as a stereotypical designer.

So after seeing these references, I have a rough idea on what I will be doing and stay tuned.
